October 2013

Hi Everyone:
WOW WOW WOW - once again we had an amazing turnout for Fringe tat weekend. There were close to 70 participants who came from several American States, Nova Scotia, England and our 'local' Ontario people this past weekend. The event has barely passed and we are getting feedback from participants about how much they enjoyed it all. Sisters who came for one class are promising that they will definitely return for the whole event next year. That is a wonderful endorsement ! The raffles and live auction were something to see. We were very fortunate to have 3 special shuttles in this year's live auction. The bidding wars were on for a Jane Eborall 'pop-a-bobbin', a Keld Olesen wood shuttle from Denmark and a Jon Stawasz shuttle from Poland. Thank you to all those who got involved and bid so generously.
The 4 Season tatted wallhanging turned out beautifully and also received very high bids and went 'home' to Northern Ontario.
We are hearing from many participants, that they enjoyed the relaxed, social environment and there were a lot of happy tatters who were able to complete projects within the class time.
The vendors offered many tempting treats and were very pleased to have Karey Solomon introduce her new book: Twinkle Twinkle.
Mark the date on your calendar - next year's event will be September 26 and 27 - we look forward to seeing you there !
Season 4 - Fall Exchange
It's already time for the final exchange of 2013. So many people have been involved this year and with our expanded destinations, these exchanges are now literally circulating world-wide, from Australia to Denmark, England, across the States and Canada.
Some wonderful pieces have been made and delighted the recipients. Some of the photos are on our website: www.fringtatters.ca. Have a look and think about joining us.
Because this is the Fall exchange - there are so many possible projects - things for the harvest, Halloween, the change of the season and even includes the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays .........
Dates
1. Let us know by October 11 if you wish to participate - send a new e-mail (not a reply) with the
subject line EXCHANGE.
2. You will receive the name and address of the person you will be tatting for by October 15.
3. All items must reach their destination no later than December 31 - be mindful of international postage and holidays.
Next year opens a whole new array of possible projects. PLEASE if you have ideas for the type of items you'd like to tat - let us know - we haven't done things that are 3-dimensional (being aware of the cost of international postage), wildlife, natural items or jewelry. Your input and suggestions are very much appreciated. You can always send your thoughts to us at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Other Bits
Please remember that the Fringe continues to offer drop-ins in the London and south Etobicoke area in local libraries and you can find the dates on our website. You are always welcome to join in.
If you would like to host an tat 'n chat, let us know and we'll try to help notify members in your area.
A final thought - please remember that 'membership' in the Fringe consists of one small tatted heart sent to Ruth.
The Fringe continues to grow and be successful because of our membership and the sharing of time and talent that it fosters.
Until next year .......
Happy Tatting from the Fringe

July 01, 2013

Hi Everyone - Happy Canada Day and almost Happy 4th of July to our American members. And a special welcome to our new Danish members.
It's a busy time of the year for the Fringe as we prepare to host our annual Tat Weekend in Cambridge, Ontario on September 27 and 28. Our registration package is now available at www.fringetatters.ca along with photos of some of the inspiring classes that will be offered. Please consider coming to join us ........ you will have a great weekend! Bring your tatting and non-tatting friends, we have classes for them as well. There is a lot to do in the Cambridge area if you want to make it a family weekend.
Summer fairs and festivals are everywhere. Beautiful tatted jewelry was displayed for sale this weekend at the Cobourg Waterfront Festival. The Port Colborne Museum hosted “Arabella’s Pie Social and History Fair” at the end of May and our members were present with their tatting. Please consider supporting any local events by volunteering to demonstrate your tatting skills. Event organizers are often looking for something new to showcase. Let us know if you are demonstrating tatting at any event and could use some Fringe flyers or business cards. Your help in promoting tatting awareness and the Fringe Element Tatters is appreciated. We continue to grow because people learn about us because of you - you'd be surprised at how often we hear - we didn't know you existed. Thank you for helping to spread the word.
August Tat 'n Chat
We are VERY excited to have one of our Danish members visiting Canada this summer and we are organizing a Tat 'n Chat day on Tuesday August 13, in Toronto in the Yonge/401 area. We would love to have you come and greet our visitor who is quite keen to meet Canadian tatters and any members who happen to be around Toronto at that time on vacation.
If you would like to join us, send an e-mail for further information. We encourage you to bring any projects you are working on and will arrange a pot luck lunch, but we need to know if you are coming. Please respond to gmail no later than Friday August 2 if you plan to come.
Summer Tatting Exchange
A wonderful selection of items have been sent around the world in our Spring exchange. There were Easter eggs, beehives, butterflies, wheel barrows of flowers, spring coloured motifs, a robin chasing worms - a lot of very creative pieces were made.
It's now time to launch our 3rd exchange of the year - Season 3 - Summer. This could be an interesting challenge to tat.
What could you make? A boat, fish, a beach scene with chair and beach ball, sea shells ....... Have you considered trying to make a piece of jewelry with your tatting, a necklace or pair of earrings, a brooch?
Because the exchanges are now traveling around the world, it's exciting to receive beautiful tatted pieces from far away.
If you are willing to participate in this exchange - please send a quick response back to Fringe (please don't resend this e-mail) in the subject line please put 'exchange'.
Dates:
Absolute firm deadline to request to participate is: Friday July 12
The name of your recipient will be sent to you no later than: Sunday July 14
Items must be sent to and received no later than: September 30
Enjoy the season and happy tatting

April 01, 2013

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL TAT DAY everyone ! hope you have an inspiring project, some really good chocolate and a cup of tea close at hand - all required on this special day.
Is it Spring yet ??? This winter certainly made up for the shortfall in snow and cold over the past couple of years. Can we please see some sun and feel some warmth again ?
We're excited - several members of the Fringe are packing shuttles/needles and thread for our trip down to the Finger Lakes tatting weekend on April 13 and 14. The weekend is always full of warm hugs, friendly smiles, amazing food and projects to love. Karey Solomon and her organizing committee are featuring the theme Stars and we know it will be fabulous from the pot luck dinner Friday night until the last table is folded on Sunday afternoon. If you're reading this and wishing - consider taking the trip to Lodi NY next year (a short 4 hour drive from the Toronto area).
OR better still, start planning to attend this year's Fringe event in Cambridge on September 27 and 28. We have our teachers lined up and ready for a great weekend ..... information will be available at www.fringetatters.ca by the beginning of May. Attending a tat weekend is a great getaway, bring your friends, learn, share, indulge, laugh, spend, ............
EXCHANGE
I can't believe it's already time to launch the next exchange - SEASON 2 - SPRING
Some really interesting things were received in the Winter exchange - snowmen, hearts, colourful bangles .......
Our members in New South Wales, Australia are looking forward to participating in this exchange - so while the dates may seem longer until you are notified of your 'partner', please don't hesitate to start tatting once you commit to the exchange.
It's a lot easier to tat at the beginning and send off an item than to get a reminder and be rushed near the end.
Dates
Please let us know by April 15, 2013 if you are interested in participating in the Season2 - Spring exchange.
You will receive your recipient's name by April 23, 2013.
Your recipient must have their item no later than June 30, 2013.
Because this is the Spring exchange - think of all the beautiful colours of thread you could use to make flowers, butterflies, birds, a garden scene or gardening items ....... so many possibilities - you could even try something 3 dimensional.
Just send a quick e-mail to the Fringe to let us know you'd like to participate (please do not just reply to this e-mail, it sends the whole e-news back and don't need that !)
SPECIAL REQUEST
This year during Fringe weekend in September, we will be auctioning a quilted Seasonal wallhanging as a fund raiser and we need some help. We will be making a 4 block piece with seasonal tatted items for Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall and are appealing for donated tatted work. The pieces should be on the smaller side, 2 - 3 inches so we can fit several into each block.
We haven't confirmed our colour backgrounds yet, but are thinking there will be pale blue behind the winter pieces (about 10 inches square), green for Spring, yellow for Summer and orange for Fall. The colour backgrounds will help you decide which thread colour to tat with. The donated tatting for all
seasons will need to be in our hands by July 30 so we can construct the piece. If you have any questions, please send us a note. And please let is know if you will tat something for this creation.
Your help is appreciated more than you realize - many tatters making a small piece will create a masterpiece !

The Fringe

January 02, 2013

Hi Everyone ......... Happy New Year ! Let's hope 2013 is a peaceful, non-violent year with lots of opportunity to tat and enjoy friends. This year, the Fringe has chosen the theme of A Season To Tat. Living in Canada we usually experience all four seasons and each has it's own joys and grumbles. A New Year of Exchanges Last year we had a very successful year of exchanges with tatted work traveling around the world. Please consider joining an exchange, wonderful friendships are made through them. Each exchange allows you a 3 month period to chose and complete a piece of tatting. Items don't need to be elaborate unless you wish them to be. We have been very pleased to have some of our novice tatters join in and build confidence in their skills, and many of our 'seasoned' tatters share their work as well. The first exchange this year will be: Season One - Winter. Suggested items that you could tat include: the ever popular snowflake, icicles, a snowman, a sledding scene, Valentine hearts or even Shamrocks as the exchange will be due to the recipients by March 29. Let us know if you wish to join this exchange NO LATER than January 11, 2013. You will receive the name of your recipient by January 15, 2013. Your tatted item is to be received by your recipient NO LATER than March 29, 2013. When requesting to join an exchange, please send a quick reply with the word 'Exchange' in the subject line and any address change. Fringe Membership Just a reminder that membership in the Fringe Tatters is one simple tatted heart. These are used to promote tatting. Is your membership up to date? Simple patterns are on our webpage: www.fringetatters.ca. Please let other tatting friends know about us. Other Bits
First a product inquiry. To those of you who attended Fringe weekend, have you tried your sample of Dazzle thread ? Are you interested in obtaining more of it ? Please let us know what you think. For those of you who haven't seen this thread, it is a rayon metallic blend produced by WonderFil Thread based in Calgary, Alberta. It works up like a size 8 perle coton and comes in an array of lovely colours. Are you a member of the Ring of Tatters that is based in England? They publish 2 wonderful newsletters every year and offer competitions for tatting. This year there is a prize especially for Canadians resulting from a donation made in memory of Maple Leaf Tatters. Membership information is available at www.ringoftatters.org.uk.
