October 11, 2010

Hi Everyone .......
What a fun weekend !!!!! From the comments heard around the room, the Fringe hosted another very successful Tat Weekend September 24 and 25. The teachers showed us some
wonderful projects - everything from crystal bracelets to using crystals for mystical powers - thank you Kaye Judt, Tracy Jackson, Brenda Franklin, Heather Lickley and our terrific local
mentors Norm, Kelly, Carlene and Susan. Thank you especially to all the participants who truly made this a "Special Occasion".  We wish you all could have been there ......... if you didn't get a chance to attend, how about coming to a ............

Tat 'n Chat
A tat 'n chat is planned for Sunday November 21 in the Oakville (Ontario) area. You can work on your UFO's or participate in a Treasured Christmas Ornament project. If you are interested in attending, reply to this gmail with a subject line reading 'Oakville' and information will be sent to you on the specific time and location with directions.
We are hoping to reschedule our postponed get together in Kitchener in the Spring of 2011.

Tat Exchange - The Place I Call Home
It's time for another exchange ............ The idea this time is about the place you call home ..... Tat something representational of where you live - for example - I live in Toronto, so I could tat a CN tower (well maybe not) or a bluebird or cardinal like the ones who frequent my backyard, or a trillium that is my provincial flower or a maple leaf that will soon be scattered about my lawn as
the season changes ......... My sister who lives in British Columbia could get inventive and create a landscape on a card of the mountains she sees every day (there's a challenge) ....... Hopefully, this will get you thinking - and could be very exciting since we now have members from across Canada, the States, England and even in Australia ...... wouldn't it be fun it get a tatted kangaroo ?
It is very important that if you sign up, you are sure you will make something for the person assigned to you. Unfortunately in the past we have had people who didn't commit fully and left their recipient wondering what had happened to their item. An empty mailbox is no fun.
It's time to get creative - this exchange has so many possibilities.
Dates for this exchange:
Send a response to this gmail with a subject line 'Exchange' no later than October 22, 2010 that you want to participate.
Your recipient's name and information will be sent to you by November 5, 2010.
Items need to reach their destination no later than December 31, 2010.

Fringe Tat Weekend 2011

We are already looking forward to our next Tat Weekend September 23 and 24, 2011.  Your input is needed. In order to make a successful event, we want your ideas.
The competition next year is to decorate a small hat - the type made with braided straw trim. The diameter of the hat brim is 6 inches and the height to the crown approximately 2 inches. These hats can be picked up at craft stores. We will also bring a few with us to Hector next April.
May your shuttles be busy as the holidays approach !

July 27, 2010

Hi Everyone ......... what a smokin' hot summer we seem to be experiencing this year!  Good thing tatting doesn't work up too much of a sweat. Here's the latest news to enjoy preferably with a glass of something cool .....
Tat Weekend 2010
Have you sent in your registration yet for the Fringe Tat Weekend in Cambridge on September 24 and 25? Remember the registration forms are now on our website - www.FringeTatters.ca and should be sent to Ruth no later than September 10. There are wonderful teachers coming and special plans are underway. Don't miss out. Better still - share the fun and bring a friend.

Parking and staying at the Best Western makes for a worry-free weekend with all the events just an elevator ride away, please call the hotel to book a room by August 24 and ask for the Fringe Element Tatters group rate.
We are really excited about celebrating our 5th year and we will be offering a special commemorative wooden shuttle to be picked up during the Cambridge weekend. Because there will be a limited number, please pre-order to ensure one will be there for you. The shuttles are being made by the Shuttle Shop and cost $35 (payment will be collected at the event). Please send a reply to this e-mail with the heading - reserve shuttle - to have one aside for you.
Have you decorated your small heart box from last year's goodie bag for this year's competition???? Let's see how creative you can really be. In the past, we have had mail-in entries, so there's no excuse not to participate. There will of course be a prize based on viewer's choice votes.
Membership Hearts
When was the last time you tatted a heart to keep your membership current???
We usually receive several hearts on the tat weekend, but if you are not attending, please send your hearts to Ruth. Remember hearts should be small and simple since they are distributed to promote tatting.
Even though membership is a minimum of one small tatted heart per year, we would really appreciate more. We expect we'll need lots to hand out next May at the multi-discipline fibre event being hosted by The Canadian Embroiderer's Guild in London
http://www.ceglondon.com/GatheringThreads/Intro.htm.
Tat 'n Chats
On a VERY rainy Saturday in June, 10 members of the Fringe gathered together at Rosemary's lovely Toronto home for a tat 'n chat. Some great show and tell came out for sharing and there was discussion about threads, books and magazines. Rosemary tells us the power went off about 10 minutes after the last person left! Someone was smiling on us.
Upcoming Tat 'n Chats
As of this newsletter, we are aware of 2 upcoming tat 'n chats. One mid- to late-October in Kitchener and another in November in Oakville. Please stay tuned for details.
Exchanges
Our Special Occasion Exchange became truly international this time. Several members of the New South Wales Tatting Guild in Australia joined this exchange. I know some of the North American participants were really surprised to be receiving items from so far away. I heard about a lot of cards to celebrate various events.
The rewards of joining these exchanges are surprising - as well as receiving another tatter's work, some people have begun correspondence with their exchangee, closing the distance for some of our worldwide tatters.
A new exchange will be started with the next newsletter. Please plan to participate.
Upcoming Events
The Palmetto Tatters annual event takes place August 27 - 28 in Toccoa, Georgia. See their website for details. http://www.palmettotatters.org/events/TatDays2010/TatDays2010.shtml
Well that's the scoop to date. Hope you are finding time to tat this summer.

Tat Weekend in Lodi
The weekend of April 10 and 11, several Fringe members attended the Finger Lakes Tatting Group weekend
in Lodi, New York (formerly Hector). What a fabulous weekend of learning with inspirational ideas

good things to tempt us and the food was fabulous. People came from all over - even driving in from
Oklahoma and Rhode Island this year!
Upcoming Events
A Tat ‘n Chat is organized for Saturday June 12, 2010 in the Toronto area (just east of the DVP/404 and
Sheppard Ave, and accessible by public transit.)

Library
A wonderful contribution of tatting books and newsletters have been received by the Fringe Library in memory
of Lori Ludman (who passed away last year). Her sister Berta was kind enough to think of the group and send
us these items so that they can be enjoyed by others.
Newsletters
Thank you for all the positive feedback on our e-newsletters!
We have had requests from people with dial-up to eliminate large attachments that can cause download
problems. So instead of attachments, we will give you links to the information on the website.
That's all for now but we do really appreciate your input and suggestions. Please feel free to contact us
any time. And please feel free to share the news with other tatting friends.

Winter is always a great time to hibernate with your tatting and other fun crafts.
With Spring just around the corner, it's time to catch you up on the latest news.

Tat 'n Chats
In November, the Fringe held a get together in Mississauga at Norm's home. About 10 people
arrived with 'works in progress', questions and laughter to share. Sylvia was thrilled that Carlene
taught her daughter-in-law how to needle tat. It was a wonderful day.
This past weekend Deana & Carlene organized a super gathering in London, Ontario.
A special thank you to Deana's mom for opening her home to us.
Nine tatters attended, including 2 new faces. A highlight was Rita teaching 3 needle tatters how
to shuttle tat. If you are having difficulty getting the knot to flip with the "under-over / over-under"
shuttle method, Rita's trick is to try the old European method which is described in Rebecca
Jones' "Complete Book of Tatting" as Method #1 - The Reverse Riego Method.
Everyone that is able to attend these small Tat 'n Chats always has a great time. If you would like
some help organizing an event in your area please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Tatting Exchanges
The Winter Frolic exchange that ended in January had a record number of participants from across
Canada and the US. Some really unique items showed up this time with everything from
bookmarks, to snowmen, to snowflakes, to ice skates and a toque.
Fringe members are so creative! Here's your chance to join the newest exchange.......
Special Occasion Exchange
As we celebrate our 5th year, we would like to incorporate this year's theme of "Special Occasions"
into this exchange.
The item to create for your recipient should be suitable to attach to a card for a special occasion.
There are so many possibilities - holidays, weddings, birthdays ................
You can attach your tatting to a card or just place it in an envelope and mail it.
The idea is to get you tatting and to share your lovely work with someone who will appreciate it !
We suggest keeping items simple and inexpensive on postage.
Important Dates for this exchange:
1. If you wish to participate, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
by Thursday April 1- International Tat Day ! (no fooling)
In the subject line of your response, please put the word 'exchange'.
2. By April 16, Ruth will let you know who your recipient is with a mailing address.
3. Your completed tatting should be received by your recipient no later than Friday May 28.
If you wish to receive an item for a specific occasion please let us know and we'll pass that
information on.
Remember this is to be a simple exchange. You will be sending to and receiving from different
people.
Saying Goodbye
Last year, we said a sad farwell to many of our tatting friends. Shirley Putzig, Joyce Harper, Mary
Tremaine, Lori Ludman and internationally know Mary Konior. As so many put it - they are tatting
with the angels now. If you are lucky enough to own Mary Konior's books that are a wealth of
information, treasure them - the cost is skyrocketing on the secondary market.
Library
Just a reminder that we have acquired the Maple Leaf Tatters Library, and are setting up our own
lending library.
Since we have no budget for the acquisition of books and magazines, we rely on the generosity of
our fellow tatters to donate items. So if you’ve ever accidently purchased a book twice, or been in
a second-hand book store and come across a book that you already have, keep us in mind.
You can check out the listing of our current holdings at www.fringetatters.ca/library/
Happy tatting until the next e-news !
