Hi Everyone - the Fringe Tatters have been very busy over the past couple of months .......
August Field Trip
In early August, three of the Canadian members ventured south of the border for a tatting weekend at
Ruth Perry’s. It was great to see Ruth and the Boniface’s again, and to meet new tatting friends from
Ohio. We learned the Balanced Double Stitch, tatted the Celtic Knot Heart from Ruth’s book
Celtic Tatting: Knots & Patterns and conquered her Wild Tatted Fringe Boa.
Website News
The next step was to get our website up and running. It is currently still a work in progress (we plan to
add pictures and other information) and value your opinion as to how we can improve.
Please check us out at www.FringeTatters.ca and let us know what you think. We are hoping by mid to
late November to have photos up from the tat weekend.
Your comments can be sent to our e-mail address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. any time, we love hearing
from you!
Tat Weekend September 25 & 26, 2009
In a word - WOW ! (but we're biased) A lot of very positive energy was happening in Cambridge that
weekend. There was such a variety of classes and wonderful teachers, everyone was busy and 'happy
tired' by Saturday evening.
It was great to welcome members from England, the States, local Canadians and many new people
joined us this year. We also noticed a lot of needle tatting going on!
Whether or not you were able to attend this year, we would appreciate your comments so we can improve
future events. It is important for us to know if that time of year or location does not work for you. You can
get a copy of our survey from our website home page.
Tatting Exchanges
Soon the Fall’oween Exchange will be complete. If you haven't mailed your item out yet, remember the
October 31 deadline. I've heard about ghosts and spooky pumpkins making their way through the postal
system!
If you would like to send photos of your 'treasure' to gmail, we can add them to the website.
Because the current exchange is coming to an end, I think it's time to start a new one.
This will be our WINTER FROLIC ! Tat something for winter: snowflakes, snowmen, mittens, a
toboggan?
You can use an existing pattern or create your own. Recipients like to know where your pattern
originated.
Important dates for the new Winter Frolic exchange:
1. Please request that you want to be included no later than November 15 (to Ruth at this e-mail
address).
2. By November 30, you will be sent the name and address of the person you will make an item for.
3. Please make sure that your item reaches your recipient by January 15, 2010.
(if that's too tight a timeline over the holidays we can extend it, but please let me know).
I'm always looking for ideas for exchanges in terms of topics, the best time to have them or if you would like
something more complex such as a small group swap of an item or a round robin.
Tat 'n Chat
We are organizing a Tat ‘n Chat to be held in south Mississauga on November 14, 2009. The tatting fun
starts at 10:30 am. Bring your “Holiday UFO’s” and lunch. Contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for
more details.
Let us know if you would like us to help you with a Tat ‘n Chat in your area.
Tat Weekend 2010
Would you believe plans are already underway for our 5th tat weekend !
Please mark your calendar for September 24 & 25, 2010.
The “viewer’s choice” challenge for our 2010 event is to decorate the plastic heart box that was included
in the 2009 goody bag. Please let us know if you need one to participate in the challenge.
We will also be bringing some of the hearts to Hector in April.
Happy Tatting and Happy Holidays until the next e-news
The Fringe

August 10, 2009

Hi Everyone......... hope your summer is treating you well, we sure have had some weird
weather coast to coast this year.
The countdown is on ! The Fringe Tatters weekend event is growing ever closer and
before you know it September 25 and 26 will be here. We sincerely hope that you are
planning to come and join in the fun. Remember hotel accommodations need to be made
by August 26 (quote 307 and Fringe Tatters to ensure our special rate) - there is a lot of
behind the scenes fun and extra tatting that happens after class hours at the hotel !
Registration forms for the weekend with payment need to be sent to Ruth no later than
September 14 please.
Are you working on your challenge piece???? Remember that wire 'napkin' holder? There
is a great prize for the viewer's choice of these works of art. Go on - give it a try.
We do have a flyer for the September Tat Days available to send via e-mail that can be
printed and posted in local shops to generate more interest in the Fringe.
Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for your copy.
Time for another EXCHANGE !!!
The Spring's the Thing exchange worked so well, that it's time to get going on the
Fall'oween Exchange!
Important dates for the exchange.
1. Please request that you want to be included no later than August 25.
(to Ruth at this e-mail address)
2. By September 10, you will be sent the name and address for the person you will make
something for.
3. Please make sure that your item reaches your recipient by October 31.
Remember this is a simple exchange. You will be sending to and receiving from different
people.
Some suggestions - Fall leaves, Fall flowers, Harvest things or Halloween items.
You can mount your item on a card or just pop it into an envelope. The idea is to get you
tatting and to share your lovely work with someone who will appreciate it !
If you would like to be part of a larger group exchange in the future, please let me know.
This involves more tatted items but would be kept within a group of 5 or 6 participants.
Tat 'n Chats
This year there were a couple of local tat 'n chats that were well received. If you are
interested in setting up an afternoon or a day, let us know and we'll help get the word out.
Books and Such
We have recently acquired the Maple Leaf Tatters Library and are setting up a process
for lending books & magazines. Stay tuned.
We've also heard (through Tatting Times) that Heather Lickley has completed her
research on Elgiva Nicholls and has written an illustrated biography. Heather will be in
Cambridge for the tat weekend and you may want to consider adding her book to your
own collection.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon and hopefully seeing you in September.
Happy Tatting

April 21, 2009

Hi Everyone ............ lots of great things have been happening in tatting !
First a BIG thank you to all of you who participated in the 'Spring's the Thing' exchange. We had
about 20 people who sent bunnies, bouquets, baskets or butterflies to their exchange partner.
Everyone was very pleased with the items they received and several have mentioned they are
looking forward to the next 'swap'.
If you have any ideas for a theme please send them along.
Please note, the Fringe has a mailbox: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Any ideas, suggestions or
general thoughts can be sent to this address.
In March, Susan Johnston and Carlene Hitchens met with the London Embroiders Guild to give a
presentation and do some show and tell about tatting. The presentation was well received and
we do hope that some of their members will decide to join the Fringe. There was the opportunity
to pass out some of the hearts to interested attendees.
This is a great moment to remind you - have you submitted a heart to the Fringe lately? We ask
that they are small and can be made from any pattern, thread size or colour. They are great for
promoting the craft we love to those who don't know much about tatting.
This past weekend 6 Canadians crossed the border to attend the Finger Lakes Tatting Seminar in
Hector New York. Karey Solomon and her organizing committee had a wonderful weekend with
several guest teachers. It was a busy time with lots of laughter, learning and the chance to meet
up with our American friends and meet new people. We know that several of the ladies present
at the weekend are very much looking forward to crossing the border and heading north to attend
our event in September.
Many of you have been members of the Maple Leaf Tatting group based in Toronto and have
enjoyed attending their yearly spring tat day. Unfortunately the decision has been made to fold
the group and their final meeting will take place on Saturday May 30 in Toronto. If you would like
to attend, please let me know and I will forward you the information on behalf of Sandy Coleman.
It is sad to see the end of a tat group that saw many years of interesting workshops and helpful
newsletters.
And finally (for this e-news), the upcoming Fringe Tatting event !!!!! We have the weekend set to
go for Friday and Saturday September 25 and 26 in Cambridge. The registration package will be
coming to you in a separate e-mail in the very near future. We have a great lineup of teachers
and classes and some new ideas to try this year. Please mark the weekend on your calendar
and plan to attend. We know you'll have a great time.
Enjoy the warmer weather and get those shuttles and needles working !
Happy tatting from the Fringe.
